Nope, transfer and sync to a PC or Mac. Drag files from your flash drive to iTunes, then sync music to your iPad when connected to your computer.

Copy the files to your computer and then transfer the files to the iPad from the computer. You cannot connect a memory stick to an iPad.
What kind of files are they? The iPad is not a laptop, so there is a lot that is different, especially with file management.
You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

Cheers, Tom 😉
Keeping in mind that the iPad doesn't use a conventional "desktop" file management system, the easiest way to transfer files between the iPad and a regular computer is with the application Dropbox. It is a free app and 2GB of storage is also free. Visit: https://www.dropbox.com
USB flash drive or send email.
Like others have said, upload or sync data onto your device. The caveat with plugging your flash drive into the camera kit is that it ONLY works for photos or videos and is very buggy. I've had a 50/50 success rate with flash drives working (a 2011 iOS update reduced the amount of power allotted to the connection port so many drives do not work)
There is no 'my computer' on the iPad. No overall file manager. (This is why the iPad is more resistant to viruses than other devices, viruses attack that file manager, since the iPad doesn't have it the viruses can't propogate across your operating system)
Since there is no file manager, all files must be associated with an app. For example, PDF files with iBooks or a pdf reader, word and excel documents with a word processing app, music with the music app, etc.
Syncing your data through iTunes and associating it with an app, or uploading it to a service, such as dropbox or sugarsnc, etc are the main ways to get data onto your device.
Thank you so much guys for all the support and work arounds. 🙂
Excellent idea! Thank you!
Know of anyway to transfer with out wifi. The whole reason I got the ipad was for being out in the woods and transferring camera footage from my cams to the USB in order to free up space. Figured since I'm already Mac'ed out, might as well get the ipad in stead of another tablet.
You must copy the files from the memory stick to your computer firstly, then you can sync the files from you PC to you iPad.
It is very easy to transfer file from PC to iPad, you can refer following steps to connect the two devices:
1. Connect your ipad to itunes.
2. Then drag the pictures from your pc to your itunes at the left side under librar column, you cannotice if it is acceptable if you can see + sign highlighted.
3. Then click your account (like your ipad name) then search the photos tab.
4. Under photo tab check the box beside sync photos.
5. Then after that at the bottom youcan see Sync then click..
And if you are Mac user, you can also refer this page of how to transfer files from Mac to iPad.
Hope they will do you a favor.
VerizonWired, the best way to do what you want is to buy an Eye-Fi memory card for your camera. It is capable of setting up an adhoc network and transfering photos to your iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch.
FileApp Pro is an amazing little App that does far more than it seems at first glance. Not only will it store files, play files, etc. but it has a free PC program called DiskAid for transferring files either from the PC to the IPad or vice versa to the selected App.
I was pleasantly surprised at this App as I am usually disappointed in what Apps claim for themselves. This is the kind of App that grows on you.
-Buy a portable (battery powered) wi-fi router with file sharing such as MOCREO 5-in-1 Portable WiFi (not personaly vouching for this one it just happens to be the one I have and it cost less than the apple connection cables).
-Plug your USB stick into the router
-Connect your iphone/iPad via wi-fi to the router.
-Log into the routers built in file managment or use any FTP capable app to connect (GoodReader, ifiles, etc)
Transfer files.
