Find my iPhone doesn't work

After having my first iPhone stolen, I decided to try the app "Find my iphone" on my friend's loaner iPhone 3GS to see how and if it really works.

When I turned it on, I ensured that these were all setup:

- Location Services: ON

- Find My iPhone: ON

- Cellular Data: ON (3 Bars Service at the time)

- WiFi: ON and connected to the router

- Internet utilizing apps: ON and in use

Doing all this, I went to iCloud.com and decided to locate the phone, and test out the Find my iPhone feature. After 5 attempts to locate and 1 attempt to send the phone a message, it still came up as "No Location" and then "Offline".

I was browsing the internet on iPhone's Safari App, while these "finding attempts" were going on. What a miserable fail.

Now I'm wondering if whoever stole my iPhone 4S is actually browsing the internet and having a wonderful time while I sit here miserable, thinking that this feature actually provided a service that I could use to find my phone. Appears to me, through my experience, that this is a total fluke.

My sister's Droid actually has a phone finding app that works. It was very disappointing to hear that her non-Apple product topped the abilities of my iPhone 4S. As much as it hurts, I actually decided that I will switch to that new Samsung sIII in the following week. I feel like I got jipped by my favorite company 😟

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1, iPhone 3GS test also

Are you changing your password on the Apple site, or just your phone or tablet's password?

Find My iPhone uses the App Store/Apple account password (just making sure.)

Make sure you have changed your Apple account password, the one you use to get email and App store access. Then try again on the phone.

If it still does not work, see if you can you log in at https://www.icloud.com/?

If yes, then click on the Find My iPhone icon and see if it works there. That will confirm that your password is correct.

If that all works, I suggest you delete the Find My iPhone application from your phone or tablet which will also delete its preferences, and reinstall it by downloading it again. That might let you enter your password again.

iPhones do not suck. Their hardware design is of the highest quality. Their operating system is simple. The problem is, that the current Apple company refuses to fix what's broken before moving on to new hardware designs and new iOS systems. For example, when iOS 7.0 was introduced, Apple disabled the Move & Scale feature that the user would adjust the subject photograph prior to setting a lock screen or background screen. Prior to iOS 7.0, if you "pinched" a wide aspect ratio photo to make it fit within the width of the screen, you could set your background photo or lock screen photo so you could view the entire width of the photo. When iOS 7.0 was released, this feature no longer worked. Now when you "pinch" a photo to make it fit within the width of the screen, it zooms back out to original size when you release your fingers. It's been three years since this iOS was released. Everyone knows about it, yet Apple refuses to fix it. This is a systemic problem with large successful companies... not seeing the basics because the revenue of the new fall releases is more important. Apple can fix this issue within 15 minutes, so why don't they do it? No one knows. Another example is the terrible interface of moving Apps prior to iTunes sync via iTunes. Anyone who's tried to move their Apps around or reorganize their Apps via iTunes prior to syncing their iPhone knows what this is... It is an awful process, which again, can be fixed in 15 minutes. Apple was made famous by the simple, functional design, which was easy to use and didn't create any frustrations. PC was far behind Apple because they didn't have this ethos. They didn't have anyone who innovated. Now, Tim Cook, who worked for Compaq and IBM is at the helm at Apple. These companies have never led their field. They've only followed. Apple was built by Steve Jobs and his simple designs that just worked. Tim Cook could fix these problems, but he hasn't. Anyone wonder why? What is taking up so much of his time? Why is he not having meetings on the simple. Make complex into simple again.

Ms. St._Clair,

Thank you for your suggestion. You appear to be a Level 9 user/admin. As you know, Apple Feedback is a one way street. I've submitted hundreds and hundreds of feedback suggestions with regard to Apple issues of all kinds. Apple Feedback is actually a quick link/URL in my right side dock and I visit it very often. Sad to say, not one of these reports has resulted in a repair of the problems I've mentioned, yet I continue to hope and fill out feedback as I get frustrated with the programming here on my two Apple computers.

I've submitted multiple feedback entries on both of these issues, long ago, yet they still remain unfixed. I am attempting to participate in making Apple better but Apple is making it difficult to keep up the submissions. If nothing gets fixed, why would we keep submitting feedback?

Kind regards,

J

Oh good, I wondered how long it would take before we got to the sky is falling, Apple is failing, the company is closing. It has been so long. Thank you.

But I will agree with one part, the company is not the same company it used to be. They have become much like Microsoft used to be with buggy software, a company that does not support their errors, and changes for change's sake. And their lack of service support is disappointing.

But the phones do not suck. You may not like them, but that is an opinion and not a fact.

Orubin, so you agree entirely. No one said the sky was falling, just that Apple is not working on the basics and fixing what's broken. In other words, "the company is not what it used to be". Then you go on to say they are much like Microsoft... Which is exactly what I said... Run by a product of Compaq and IBM... This is why you don't get the simple reliable product that Apple used to have. It's similar to hiring a Chrysler executive to run a Porsche company. Of course it's not going to work. If I did, he would have changed Chrysler for the better long before he would have left and we all know that didn't happen. Compaq and IBM are still the mediocre companies they've always been. Apple is riding on a design concept that was in place long before this management team arrived. Hopefully, Tim Cook shows some character and fixes many problems in what exists, instead of making more Apple that is broken.

Last thought... open your finder window and search for a file name that you know exists on your computer. In the finder search results, do you see that name at the top? No.... it's buried in the hundreds of files that the finder shows. What kind of search engine doesn't show you what you just searched for at the top of the search results? Apples finder search engine, that's which one! Awful!

The reason you keep submitting feedback is because you don't know what Apple's current priority list is. It's quite possible that your concern is not high up on the list (and there might be good reasons of which we are unaware for it not being something that Apple changes). But, if enough people submit feedback, there is some very good empirical evidence that the issue will get more attention from Apple. If only a few people submit feedback, it's likely the issue will stay further down the list. I, for example, could care less about move and scale in setting background images. I can think of a hundred other things that I'd rather see Apple focusing their attention on and have submitted feedback on them. You might well find the things I care about unimportant. And so might Apple.

May 14, 2016 9:15 PM in response to IdrisSeabright

Well, Meg. I can tell you this.... Apple's priority list has nothing to do with fixing any of the problems I've submitted over the years. They are very concerned when you speak with them on the phone, but at the end of the day, I can't put a photo of something I like on my iPhone lock screen. I used to be able to do it in iOS 6.... after iOS 6, I haven't been able to do it. Been over three years. How can Apple not know this exists.

All of our complaints are important. If you say you could care less about mine, and I were to say the same about yours, how would we fix any of the problems? I care about every problem we find in Apple programming. Apple programming should be simple and efficient. If there are bugs, it doesn't matter if they aren't important to you, they need to be fixed, period.

May 14, 2016 9:38 PM in response to J Bertram

You perceive this as a bug. I perceive it as a change in functionality. Not likely to get fixed as it's not really broken.

I would be willing to say that Apple is aware of this change they made in functionality. It happens all the time in software. By all developers. If you poke around here, you'll see discussions from users who cling on to old versions of OSX due to changes in functionality they don't agree with.

Meg's suggestion is really the only avenue any of us have to communicate with and to Apple.

My suggestion would be to create an image to the home screen size using any one of the current graphics apps before you set it on your device's home and lock screens, thus removing the need to scale.

Ahh, sensored by Apple. Don't you love how they sensored the part which stated that you agreed with me as well. Not just the name I called you at the end. Love liberal companies don't you. Free speech is one of their strong suits.

We stay with Apple because the alternative is so bad. Apple is still a good company. We are all huge fans. This is why we care so much when we see someone come in and screw it up. It takes so little to keep things running well and they can't even do that. These are minor problems which have been reported for years and yet we still have them... and the problems.
