Time machine reconnect

I inadvertently disconnected my Time Machine back up and now when I reconnect system wants me to delet the exiting backups ( which it can see). Is it possible to reconnect so the Time machine resumes where it left of.

If not, is it possible to save it and access it as well as the new one I create?
