Hi guys,
I was wondering whether if you could connect the MBA with Mini Display Port to the iMac with thunderbolt port for use as an external diaplay. (I want to connect the MBA to the iMac so the iMac can be used as an external display). Can it be done? Please reply ASAP. I want to do this setup ASAP.

No, this combination doesn't work. The connection method is controlled by the port on the iMac. In this case it's Thunderbolt so a Thunderbolt cable is required to do Target Display mode with this iMac. The MBair doesn't have a Thunderbolt port so it's not supported.

How about if the iMac has the a mini display port and the Macbook has the Thunderbolt port?

Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt (via thunderbolt cable only)
or
Mini display port to Mini display port (via Mini display port cable only)
And how about thunderbolt to displayport?
