Epson 2580 Perfection Photo scanner and Mountain Lion - followed site instructions; no Apple software update available

Hooked up the Epson Perfection 2580 Photo scanner this morning to usual computer but with Mountain Lion OSX. Verified the USB port "sees" scanner, and scanner is on; followed instructions on Epson's website for Mountain Lion software upgrade with result that Mac says no software upgrades available. Called Epson and went through the whole procedure with phone contact, checking everything. It checks out from Epson's end, but was told that Mac now does something with scanner using Image Capture and something about drivers or no drivers that leaves me stuck with two wine case boxes of slides starting from 1958 to scan, and not knowing how to get the scanner up and running.

Is there software update? How have you all managed this issue? Many thanks,

Gaye

P.S. I have Image Capture, but no devices show up, even though the scanner is plugged in. Will try to find how-to video on Image Capture...

P.P.S. Checked all connections and plugs. Reopened Image Capture. Now it has message that: "The scanner is in use by application Epson Perfection 2480-2580. Now what?
