Anti-Virus-Software - useful or not?

Hello Community,

in comparision with windows a mac computer does not need a anti-virus-software in the past.

But we don't live in the past so my question is: Should I install an anti-virus-software now?

Which disadvantages I may have. And which one is the best at the moment?

Thanks in forward.

This question has been asked and answered many times before. As far as I know, the answer continues to be "not useful". Some have mentioned ClamXav as "workable". I have had Mac computers for 6 years and have never used anti-virus software of any kind. I'm on my second Mac. So far, I'm still up and running.

These threads about anti-virus for macs can sometimes get quite heated 😉

My take is you don't need it but if you feel more comfortable with having some kind of AV installed the free/donationware clamXav is the one recommended on here has being trouble-free and plays nice with Macs - www.clamxav.com

Here's a couple of links to some informative reading about AV and security for Macs:
