What shows up on the iPod's display when you have it connected to a high powered USB 2.0 port on your PC?  Have you tried using a different 30 pin dock connector USB cable to rule out the possibility that your current one is faulty or damaged?

With the iPod still connected to your PC, try to reset it. To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

I assume you are running the latest version of iTunes (10.6.3 as of this writing)?

My Ipod Says that it is connected to my computer. I have tried using a different usb cable and still nothing. I have tried reseting it, and putting it into disk mode, but it still doesn't work.

I am using the most current version of i tunes.

Also I have connected it to my mothers laptop and her laptop reconizes it.

Since the iPod used to work with your PC, can you think of what might have changed since the last night you were able to successfully connect and sync the device with iTunes?  Perhaps you recently installed some new software or drivers?

Does a Devices section appear in the left hand pane of iTunes when you have the iPod connected?

Ive had my ipod classic for 4-5 years and i love it.  Since installing the latest itunes, my computer (not apple) no longer recognises it but it will recognise my hubbys newer one !

I went in to my local Apple store with my ipod and laptop.  My ipod was recognised straight away on the Apple computer.  The man said that the problem was with the computer and not my ipod.  He tried to install a new driver but was completely stumped and didnt know what else to try.

Ive tried all the videos on youtube, have tried to re-install an older version of itunes but to no avail.

    I am gutted !!!

What version of Windows are you running?  Does the iPod appear in Device manager? To check, head to Start and right->click on My Computer (XP) or Computer (Vista and 7) and choose Manage.  When the window comes up, make sure Device Manager is selected in the left hand pane.

Thanx for getting back to me.

We have Windows 7. Ive tried what you have suggested and my ipod does not show up in Device Manager when it is connected.  What next ?

When they plugged your iPod into one of their Macs, did they use your cable or one of their own? It wouldn't hurt to try another USB sync cable if you haven't done so already.

I have tried 3 different cables already.

I have tried 3 different cables already.

Sorry, you didn't mention it at all in your previous posts.

Did you completely remove all Apple related software from your system and re-installing it from scratch using the exact instructions in this Apple support document? I know you said you removed and re-installed it, but did you follow these exact steps and removed ALL Apple related software?

    Ok,

I have done all of the above as suggested.

Under devices and printers it now shows under devices our laptop and 'apple ipod usb device' and under unspecified it says 'apple mobile device jusb driver'.

When my sons ipod is connected under devices is shows the laptop and just 'ipod' and nothing under unspecified at all.

I just cannot understand why the newer ipods we have get recognised immediately and the older ones dont and this is only since we installed i-tunes 10.7.

Sorry, I forgot to say that the older ipods are still not being recognised on itunes.

The older iPods use a different driver from what is used by newer iOS devices.  So the older device does show up under Devices and Printers though?

Yes it does appear under devices and printers but not in i-tunes.  Whats our next step ?

Does it show under Device Manager anywhere?  You can access device manager by clicking Start, right->clicking on Computer and selecting Manage. When the window comes up, click the Device Manager option in the left hand pane.
