How to decipher problem report

It would be nice if there were a website that you could just cut and paste a problem report from OSX into and have it deciphered for you. Short of that, can anyone decipher this for me? The Mac rebooted itself right in the middle of surfing the internet. Thanks!

This section will almost always identify a culprit:

com.sophos.kext.sav 8.0.4

com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.5.1

Everything listed after those are Apple kexts. They usually don't cause a problem.

If all you have is apple kexts, then it might be a hardware problem (bad RAM, Graphics card, etc, or an external device).

I believe Sophos is ok, but mostly useless.

The SoundFlower driver has been flaky with every changing OS, from what I've seen on these forums.

If you don't have the installer, download it again. There is an uninstaller on the dmg.

Yes, I've seen Soundflower cause kernel panics from other posters, here. As long is sophos is up to date, I don't think it is causing a kernel panic.

You say Sophos is mostly useless, what better free options are there?

The software between your ears is the best choice. Don't authenticate random popups that want to install something you didn't ask for. If you really think it is legitimate, leave the page and go get the plug-in (or whatever) directly from the developer's website. Don't use torrents. If you are worried about passing on Windows viruses, don't pass files that you didn't create.

If you want a program to do your thinking for you, I've heard sophos is fine. ClamXAV is also widely suggested if you have to have something.

You may want to take a look at Thomas' Mac Malware Guide: http://www.reedcorner.net/mmg/

People keep saying that Sophos is fine, but it seems to be causing kernel panics for you. My advice is to remove any third party kernel extensions when you are having kernel panics. You can always put them back later. But if you remove them and continue to have kernel panics, that could be an indicator of a hardware problem. It is best to discover that as soon as possible while you are still under warranty.

Plus, it is a good opportunity to ensure that you have the latest version of any third party software.

MacOS X comes with antivirus protection, so there is no need for third party software. All any third party Mac software does is scan for Windows viruses anyway. I have seen Sophos show up in kernel panics before.

That being said, it is very rare to see a kernel panic report that does not include the "Soundflower" software. You definitely want to get rid of that. "Soundflower" is an open-source audio routing program that is included with some audio software. One of your third party audio programs installed it. Find out which one and run the uninstaller to properly remove it.
