What else do you have plugged into the Mac? USB hub perhaps? Kernel panics are generally related to hardware errors. I could even be caused by the keyboard your Mac came with if it's faulty.

Doing a RAM check with the supplied hardware diagnostics doesn't always prove anything. RAM may pass a test once, but finally show a fault after multiple passes.

Do have a USB hub ! Could that be it ?

Believe it or not, yes. One of the first things to do when trying to pinpoint a kernel panic is to unplug all unnecessary peripherals. Only the monitor, mouse and keyboard should be connected, assuming they're the wired variety, and your Mac doesn't have a built in display rather than a separate monitor. If you can't replicate a kernel panic at that point, then you start plugging things back in one at a time. Start with your Ethernet (Internet) connection and observe the results for a couple of hours. Add another device and repeat watch mode.

Hubs are notorious for causing kernel panics. Couldn't tell you why.

Yup, any hub that allows you to attach multiple devices to one station. They're not all bad, but some perform well, and others don't play nice.

Sounds like you need it to get work done, so when you get the chance, try using your Mac for a day or two without the hub plugged in and see if the kernel panics go away. If they do, there's your culprit.

I use a Mac Pro for expandability. Lots of drives, tons of RAM, Xeon CPU's, etc. Need it for all of the large apps use daily. But a positive side of that is also so I can avoid hubs like the plague. I use PCI cards in the extra slots to provide me with the extra USB and FireWire ports I need.

If you're using anything but a Mac Pro, you of course are pretty well stuck using some sort of hub to handle access to the number of devices you need since you're limited to the number of ports on the Mac itself.

Could the fact i had that kernel panic caused by the hub lead to more kernel panics afterwards even if i unplugged the USB hub ?

No. Kernel panics are usually caused by a specific piece of hardware. It can be more than one (i.e., bad RAM and bad controller on an external drive), but once they're out of the mix, it's impossible for the kernel panics to continue. At least not from that device.

There are kernel panics that can be caused by software, but they are rare. I've seen it a couple of times when working with large programs, such as Photoshop. Essentially, a piece of software manages to escape its confined area of RAM (protected RAM) and overwrites areas of RAM in use by other software. If it happens to overwrite critical OS data in RAM, you can get a kernel panic since it cannot recover from such an intrusion.

You never posted a panic log. It should be in Console in Utilties, under /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. Post the entire log.
