iChat Status Problem

iChat has been self-launching whenever I receive a message from a friend on Google Talk. I've seen similar posts here in the support forums and the solution usually given is to activate "When I quit iChat, set my status to Offlilne" under Preferences -> General. I've done that, but the problem persists. I've also turned on the menu bar status indicator. When I quit iChat it continues to show my status as "Available". Is there some other way to remedy this, besides manually changing my status to Online/Offline?
