using iTunes match, I can delete my iTunes library from my laptop to make room, right?

I want to make room on my laptop, it has about 290Gb of music, more than half of my memory. Now that I have iTunes match I want to know if I can delete those from my laptop. I will still have a backkup on my external hard drive.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2009), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

Just make sure your iTunes Matching is completed before you delete.
Signing up for iTunes Match & just paying for the service do not mean your Matching is completed.
You must make sure the Matching is completed.

To be certain, make sure you no longer see "iTunes Match" option under "Music Quick Links" which is located at the right side of your iTunes Store page

One way to be 100% sure is to delete one song in your library after Matching to see if any "Cloud" logo appears.
If there's a Cloud logo, your matching is successful.

Actually, Russell, you're not entirely accurate. The 'iTunes Match" link on the iTunes Store will still be there even after the initial scan, match and upload is finished. What you do not want to see is the iTunes Match entry in the Sources, left-hand column in iTunes.

Also, just because a cloud logo is on a deleted track doesn't mean it was "matched." The track may have been "uploaded" or the track may be "purchased." The best way to determine the status of a song after iTunes Match has run is to enable the iCloud Status column in the iTunes browser by pulling down View > View Options, select the "iCloud Status" check box and click OK.
