I'm trying to import photos from a memory stick , I have thenthingnthat plugs into theipad and then I put the stock into that, but iPad doesn't do anything, should it recognize that I have plugged something in, or do I need to do something?

No, the CCK doesn't work that way.
Copy the photos to your computer and then sync them to the iPad.
plugging a USB into the iPad via the camera connection kit is tricky.
first, i've had a 50/50 success rate with drives.
On your flash drive, make a folder named DCIM
put your images into it.
the next trick, all your images must have a name of 8 characters. For example DSC_3842 and they must be in that DCIM folder.
If you do htat, plug your flash drive in. If it's going to work,t he photos app will automatically open and give you the opportunity to choose which images to import. Make your choice and they'll transfer over.

With no computer, you will not appreciate the full capabilities of the iPad. This is but one example.
You can, but you'll need to use a computer for format the names correctly. THe protocols in the photo app literally will only see files that follow that name structure.
You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)
