I have a project shot in 480p and want to "up-rez" it to 720p. Can I just import the footage onto a 720p timeline and export a 720p project? Has anyone tried this before?

I have done that. Sort of.

I had an edit mixed with 1920 X 1080p footage, HDV, and with 480p footage in a ProRes 1080p timeline.

The system I was using had a Kona card to assist in the upre, which worked pretty well.

Do you have a capture card installed? If not then it probably won't work that well.

If you dont then Compressor is quite good at this, or about as good as you will get.

- Shane Ross used to have a very good tutorial online for this.

There are lots of plugins & other apps, but compressor does a better job in my opinion.

Other apps include Boris Upres, Red Giant's Instant HD, Reframe from Miraizon, etc.

I am about to begin a project that is very similar to the one I did before, but with no kona option to upconvert this time around.

What i will do is cut the footage in a 1920 X 1080 edit & only upres the SD footage that makes it into the fine cut with compressor. The reason I will do this at that point is I have approx 300 hrs of SD footage & to upres it all would take forever (never mind the drive space it would need) .

I have looked all over for Shane Ross' tutorial on how to do this & cant seem to find it. I think he was upconverting SD to DVCPRO HD 720p.

He is on these boards a lot, so maybe he will chime in with the link, or a better solution.

How would I characterize the 720p product? I wouls say it is a good solution for a production on a budget.

If you are upconverting you are never going to ever do as good a job as a Teranex hardware conversion, or by upconverting with a kona card.

Sorry if I didn't make that clear - re: upconvert when capturing & not once it is in a project.

I thought the link to your article did, plus it is a good read.

Was hoping you would show up here. Does that tutorial of yours still exist online?

If not, what i remeber in compressor was you used DVCPRO HD as a codec.

Is that right?

Turn frame controls on to best

Geometry set to 1280 X 720, but i cant remember the crop settings for top & bottom.

I beleive it was adjustable according to the framing of the shot, but I cant remember the

#'s you used as an example.
