Is it smart/safe to install adobe flash

I installed adobe flash on my iMac because I was tired of not being able to go to many web pages. Is it wise to have done that? Should I uninstall it? I am worried about security & it affecting the overall use of my iMac

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

For starters, open the Flash Player panel in System Preferences. Go to Advanced and see what version is showing. If you know what version you were updating to, is that now appearing?

Fake Flash was really rampant last year, and although it can't be ruled out completely now, it's probably unlikely that's what happened.

It's extremely unlikely that that happened at this time. Also, note that the only way for a fake Flash Player update notice to appear all on its own is through a website that, knowingly or unknowingly (ie, due to being hacked) displays a new window that loads a page that looks like a Flash update notice. The big difference is that this will be in a web browser window, rather than a system-level window. If you get a Flash update notice while surfing the web, check the Window menu in your web browser... if the window shows up there, it's fake.
