Personal Hotspot 3G data or WiFi connection?

If my iPhone is currently on WiFi and I turn on my Personal Hotspot, will it use my 3G data or the WiFi connection?

Long story short, I cannot access my Exchange email on my work server (until the IT guy is back from vacation). I can access my Mail through the hotspot connection though.

Just dont want to eat up my data plan just to check Mail on my iMac.

Thanks.

Our server is not accepting my MAC address at the moment on my iMac but I have no problems connecting to the server through my iPhone and iPad. When I set up the Hotspot I am able to receive and answer my emails through Mail on my iMac. It is a growing frustration but I am hoping it will be resolved this weekend.
