Q: Siri will not make hands free calls any longer. Replies "not permitted to do that"?

Owned this 4s for a few months now. It has worked beautifully until yesterday. First, it was a fight to connect my Bluetooth headset to the phone, which is an everyday thing.   Then I tried to get Siri to make a hands free call for me, which has also been an everyday thing until now.   She replies " I'm not permitted to do that"     She'll answer any question I ask, but she refuses to place a call... What gives ?

Have you tried rebooting your iPhone by pressing and holding both the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time until the Apple symbol appears, ignoring the power off slider?

Thanks for replying.    Yes, I've done numerous hard resets to the phone with no success.

I was shocked and honestly aggravated when I called Apple and they wanted me to pay for support.

I don't think this problem is due to anything I directly did. I'm almost tempted to run over this thing, and go buy a DROID if that is Apples response

Before you run over it, try the standard troubleshooting...

Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

If still a problem restore from your backup.

If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.

If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue which might be replaced under warranty.

I had this same problem - started yesterday.  Tried several hard resets without helping. Eventually did an iTunes restore and that fixed it.

This problem started yesterday for me too. Siri was able to make calls for me two days ago, but beginning yesterday only says "I'm not permitted to do that for you. My apologies."  Siri will still text, set alarms, etc., but not make calls, which is the most important and frequent thing I want it to do. I can disable Siri and use voice control instead, but that disables Siri's other features that I use.  This is the only forum on the web that I could find that mentions this specific problem, so it must be new.

I am also having this issue, noticed it the first week of September.  Like the other posts when I ask Siri to make a call it replies, "I'm not permitted to do that for you."  Well that's the primary reason I use Siri.

I had the exact same problem. After exhaustive experimentation I found a solution.

Settings > General > Restrictions > Flip FaceTime on (it was off)

When I flipped FaceTime back to off, it went back to not permitting calls. So I have to conclude that this was the issue. I guess Siri requires FaceTime now.

    I hope this helps.

Bingo!  Your "Face Time" fix does the trick.  Must be something to do w/ iOS 6?  Thanks

    Hi Jeremy,

I was having the same issue before i called the Apple help desk about it (Yes, i have Apple care on my iPhone 4s) and they told me that if the FaceTime feature is "OFF" Siri will not make external calls and will say " I'm not permitted to do that" So all you have to do is just switch the FaceTime feature "ON" and leave it like that for you to be able to give a voice command to it perform the task of making calls.

PS. I'm in New Zealand and the Maps feature suck & Passbook does not work here. Lets hope that the maps will get better over time and that Passbook work.

I have never turned "FaceTime" on, and have successfully used Siri all along. I can't see how having FaceTime turned off would disable Siri. Especially since I have been, and still use Siri while never turning FaceTime on... Sounds like hooey to me.

BTW:  I also got it back to normal simply by doing an iTunes restore. Did not touch FaceTime, Apple support never mentioned a single word about FaceTime, I have no idea where that has any relevance in this discussion.

I thank the folks who suggested the iTunes restore, it worked

    Thanks for your feedback: Rathernotpaytofixsomethingthatsnotmyfault.

I just want to make sure that i did not say that Siri did not work with FaceTime "ON/ OFF". I was only referring to the feature on Siri not being able to make calls via asking it to do so. I have now just turned FaceTime "OFF" and asked it to call a contact in my phone and it said that it was not permitted to do so. I then turned FaceTime "ON" and asked to call the same contact in my phone & it asked me if i wanted to call the persons home or mobile. Can you try the same and see if it works for you?
