Change password for Apple ID and iCloud is inaccessable

I changed the password for my Apple ID and now cannot logon to iCloud via the browser. I can logon to iTunes and appleid.apple.com but not iCloud. Phone is also affected for iMessage, iCloud, and iTunes.

Welcome to the Apple Community.

Firstly, you need to change your details with Apple, Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account.

In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")

Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.

In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)

In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > store, scroll down and tap your ID)

Winston, Thanks for the reply. While the problem does present itself on the device the problem is on icloud.com. When I changed my appleid on appleid.apple.com it changed the password for itunes but not for icloud. I can logon to the apple store and the appleid.apple.com site but not icloud. Neither my old or new password work on icloud. This of course creates problems on the device which is syncing with icloud. I have gone through the password change process several times since including the I forgot process. I have also tried signing onto icloud.com from several different workstations.

As to deleting the account on my device, I am unwilling to do this until I can get into icloud.com as my device is the only reliable source of my information for the moment.

Another strange affect of appleid.apple.com. When I change the password and save; it saves successfully. If I sign out I can sign back in without issue. If I just navigate to another area I receive an error stating "Save Changes?" - You’ve made changes to your Apple ID, but have not saved them. Would you like to save your changes before proceeding?

I can cancel out of this and it works fine on itunes and appleid.apple.com but no matter how many times I press save it still displays this message if I do anything other than sign out.

More strangeness...

My AppleID works for http://appleid.apple.com but does not work for http://discussions.apple.com. To sign onto “discussions” I open a tab in my browser, go to http://appleid.apple.com, sign in, then open a new tab to “discussions” and I'm signed in at that point. Trying to sign in directly to “discussions” give the error: "Your AppleID or password was entered incorrectly."

Very weird.

It seems the systems at Apple are not syncing the passwords correctly throughout the network. But something is being synchronized as the old as well as the new passwords do not work. So for a recap:

  1. I signed onto iCloud.com via the browser on my workstation
  2. I selected my name in the upper right hand corner which brought up some preferences one of which was my AppleID
  3. Clicking the AppleID brought me to http://appleid.apple.com
  4. I changed the password for my AppleID at http://appleid.apple.com
  5. I tried to login to iCloud.com and it failed stating ID or Password was invalid
  6. Logging into the Apple store on workstation via iTunes works
  7. Accessing iTunes via iPhone does not
  8. All iCloud functions fail to authenticate both workstation and iPhone
  9. http://discussions.apple.com fails to authenticate directly but works indirectly when another tab is authenticated to http://appleid.apple.com
  10. I have tried various times to reset the password for my AppleID via iForgot and again via http://appleid.apple.com
  11. No success for authenticating to iCloud or Discussions.

Any ideas?

All of these problems were caused by not deleting the iCloud account on my iDevice. My main concern was being able to keep all contacts should iCloud still be unreachable. You do loose photos that are stored on iCloud (but not stored on your iDevice) but contacts can be kept on the device. When I deleted the account everything started working again.

This was a simple fix that user Winston Churchill noted earlier. Thanks!

As to intuitive, I have to give Apple low marks on this one and their support while courteous, was unaware of this “workaround”.

Hi jes526 - did you ever get a resolution.

I've reset my password on Apple ID using e-mail authentication - changed password and can log into Apple ID page fine.

I can't, however, log on to iCloud with the new password - it will only accept the old password.

My iTunes is also asking me for my password and the new one doesn't work - it only accepts the old password.

Any help much aprpeciated!

Cheers,

M

Do you haveiCloudsetup on your mobile device(s)? I had it on my phone and as long as it was on the device(s), even if it wouldn't authenticate I could not logon toiCloud(via the web). Once I deleted the account on my device(s) I could log ontoiCloudandre-setupmy devices (contacts on iCloud were still there). Apple was really not much help with this. And this isobviouslya workaround for a larger defect in the Apple password management system. If you do work with support, ask immediately to speak with a level 2 support analyst.

I would have tried this sooner (deleting iCloud account from my phone) but was unwilling to lose my contacts as what was on my phone was all I had. Once I went through the process and deleted myiCloudaccount from my phone it gave me the option to keep the contacts on my device (big relief). Photos oniCloud, however, are lost but I had those already on my workstation and on my phone. Note you'll only have the photos in your album on your phone. The ones in the photo stream will be deleted. I could find no way to stop this. As to documents, I did not use this service so don't know how they will react.

I hope this helps.

Hello,

Why don't you just go to "System Preferences" on your Mac, and then click the "iCloud". When you click there, it will ask you the AppleID password; and you enter the new password. And all is set at once for all. That was what I did, because the procedure you guys described was so complicated. And I thought if from the beginning we only set one password and ID and used it for all, then why all of them can't accept and update the single pasword again. Well that worked for me and I hope it will work for you too.

Thanks.
