I've signed up for icloud and it all appears to work, except my mail account now won't receive emails which may or may not be related to the transfer to iCloud. I just keep getting the message that the incoming server can't connect to port 993. I've tried changing it and I've tried to find alternative settings via the Apple website with no joy. This is beyond me completely can anyone help?

Thanks Csound1 - I've done this and checked my settings which all appear to be correct - still no joy so maybe there is a problem with the server. Will keep trying.
Is your password 8 characters (or more) inc at least 1 uppercase letter and 1 number?
And what are your mail server addresses.
Yes to the password question. The incoming mail server address has p01 in the front which according the the settings page shouldn't be there. The address is pail in my account details and I can't seem to change it. The address I have for the incoming server is p01-imap.mail.me.com and it is this server which seems to be causing the problem - any ideas how I can change it to delete the p01 bit? Sorry - this is a bit beyond my knowledge!
I also have the same problem with my mail account on my Mac. It just came today without my doing anything.
The IMAP server I am using is p08-imap.mail.me.com. I'm certain it is a problem with the iCloud server and not my way of connectiong to it. The me.com imap on my iPhone and iPad are functioning well. I'll just wait and see what happens.
p numbers are inserted automatically, that is unlikely to be the problem. Go to system preferences>icloud and turn Mail off, reboot and turn it back on again.
Turning Mail off in preferences and rebooting, and turning it back on did not work with me. I tried enetering my password for the imap server, but Mail does not save it.

I've just rebooted the mac again and still not able to connect with the me.com imap and smtp servers. The problem just came today without my doing anything. I've had my MacBook Air for about a year with no problem.
What is the server address you are trying to connect to.
The IMAP server I am using is p08-imap.mail.me.com (587 SSL checked). The smtp server I use is p99-smtp.mail.me.com (993 SSL checked).
Remove the p-numbers and try again.
