Sep 21, 2012 8:08 AM in response to booooooooooooooooooooby planb77,It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive. I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread. He always covers what the resulting numbers indicate, which may be slightly different since your model is a bit older.

Sep 21, 2012 9:12 AM in response to planb77by boooooooooooooooooooo,Thanks planb77. I'm not the most technically minded, but i have tried most of the steps you suggested. NOTHING!!!!!!!
there didn't seem to be any errors but disk utility will not let me erase the ipod and start again. Anyone with any suggestion I would be most grateful.
Thanks again
