You can not restore a backup made with a newer version of iOS to a device running an older version of iOS.

The highest the 3G can go is 4.2.1. You will not be able to restore a backup made on your iPhone 4 to a 3G. Your contacts should be able to be synced to the 3G via iTunes if you were syncing them as intended to a supported address book or cloud service.  Unfortunately, if you were syncing them to iCloud from a device running iOS 5.x, the 3G can not sync with iCloud.

Well thanks for the help. I was hoping that wasn't the case, but it's not surprising.
