I was having a similar issue. However, I could hear sound if I was in the music app or with Siri but not games. This fixed my issue (found on another post).

If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.

I agree. I am sick of people referring me to "duh" solutions. I am not an idiot and of course I have checked the settings before looking for help. All of my problems on my 2nd gen iPad started after the iOS 6 update. After the iOS 5 update a while back I had horrible problems with the apps crashing ALL the time, over & over. They finally fixed that and everything was going smoothly until this update. Now about every 2-3 days my sound just quits. No sound from the keyboard, no alarm, no notifications, nothing... my music won't play (like you press play and it won't play) and sometimes, in my mail app only, the screen will not rotate to horizontal, it just stays vertical no matter how you twist & turn.

The solution? Power it down and then start it back up. A simple fixer, yes. Requires no genius and very little effort. But my problem is not the solution. My problem is the problem! Why does this keep happening? What is causing it? I am doing nothing different. I have not installed any new apps. I have not messed with the settings. It just works fine for a few days and then for no rhyme or reason, it doesn't. It is really annoying, especially when I am counting on that alarm & it doesn't work. Thank goodness I have my iPhone for backup.

Incidentally, I too am an avid mac fan. Our family has an iMac, 3 Macbook Pros (& 2 before), 2 iPads, 5 ipods, 1 iTouch and 2 iPhones. We have been faithful mac users for 5 yrs. They really have great customer service above many other companies and excellent products. But every time they do an update, many times with no real benefit to me, it screws up my stuff. My husband has a first gen iPad and couldn't do the iOS 6 update and his iPad works fine. What more proof do I need?

FIX THE UPDATE.... I shouldn't have to restart my iPad every couple of days just to have it function as it is supposed to.

Well, with none of your solutions doing me any good, and trying restoring to default 3 times with no success ... I went to visit the "genius".  Well, he restored it again with no volume sliders re-appearing anywhere, brushed away at various contacts, and then declared that "I have a hardware issue". In an even stranger announcement, he proclaimed that if I was within warranty he'd just give me a new one, but outside of warrenty there is nothing that he can do. So, in warranty, this is a problem for which they admit fault, out of warranty, it's got nothing to do with them.

First off, the idea that this is a hardware issue is pure bunk.  iPad2 worked perfectly in ios5, no sound (except alarm clock, which works normally) in ios6.  That is the only thing that changed ... one minute perfect, the next minute silent. The hardware was just fine before update ... faulty post-update?  Sorry, that's not how these things work. Plug in headphones ... sound.  Which makes it even weirder that after looking very hard for something to blame my problem on, he pronounced that it must be my dock connector ... which has never caused a problem before, but is suddenly "a hardware issue".

E-mail to several places at Apple ... no response.  Apple is treating me like I have the plague on this one and won't even deal with it.  I have never experienced this kind of thing with Apple, a company that has always been perfectly straight with me, but now is making excuses, making things up, and just hoping that I'll go away.

I'm very disappointed ... I feel like a good friend of 20 years has just turned on me.  These are signs to me that it's tough to be the biggest company in the world and stay honest.  Reecent decisions like getting rid of Google maps and YouTube, putting out an ios update that is faulty in numerous ways, and making an iPhone5 that has a build quality that doesn't feel up to Apple standards (the thing feels like a plastic toy) have me wondering ... none of this is the Apple that I've know and been extremely loyal to for 20+ years.  I'm more and more looking other places for technology ...

Hey Apple ... why not act like you care just a little bit, and at least admit that some things have gone wrong? That is literally all that I wanted.  Give me the real story that this update has problems, and suggest that you at least are trying to solve the issues.  That's how you did things in the past ... well, actually, you were even better than that.

... and ... I like the look of the new iMac, but I'm going to wait for a year or so to even consider buying one.  Apple is making mistakes that they didn't used to make, and I have no intention of buying a machine that is not yet up to standards and not having Apple admit that anything is wrong.  Apple, you've switched me overnight from someone who bought the iPod Touch, the Macbook Air, and the 27" iMac the day after they were announced, and will now wait to see how things work out ... congratulations ... count your money while I wait.

Exactly my problem. I went to the "Genius" and he said he thought some App had crashed the sound driver in firmware, one of the crashing Apps was the App Store App, so I guess I should avoid that. So he reset the ipad completely and said to restore from icloud. Well icloud got about 1/3 of my stuff restored and seemed to hang so I have started it over. Time will tell if the sound goes away but FIRST I will need to reinstall all my apps and I suppose if one crashes then test the sound THEN if it doesn't work take it back to the "Genius". I do believe this is a software issue and that makes perfect sense that faulty apps may take down the sound driver and the only way to get it back is a reboot. But rebooting to fix faulty sound drivers was Microsoft and PC territory. I don't want to go back to living in that country so I hope Apple takes notice and finds and fixes this bug fast. I do believe it only started when IOS6 was released.

Something so simple. Thank you. Unplugged headphones, all is well.

  • rsbitting Level 1 Level 1

Well I lost my sound again this week. I was going to show it to the "Genius" at the Apple Store but there was a longer wait than I had time for. I think I'll try the headphone jack switch the next time to see if that works. I do know the jack can mute the system sound from the internal speakers since it does route it to the jack instead. Perhaps there is a fault with that jack and it is sticking since I do switch to using headphones back and forth but never test the audio once I stop using the headphones. I'll post an update once I lose the sound and test the jack to see if that will fix it. Mine always comes back after a reboot. I did try the bluetooth off to be sure there wasn't some left over connection and that didn't bring the sound back for me.

    • Double tap the home button
    • Swipe from left to right
    • Tap the speaker icon to the far left
    • It should show “Mute Off” below the play button or unlock orientation will appear depends on IPad u will see a song appear. After u do that. Power down and hold the button when the apple appears hold it down again and allow to power up.

How To Fix No Sound in iPad Apps › how to

Josh Smithby Josh Smith - More by Josh SmithSep 15, 2011 – The iPad has an interesting mute quirk, which can result in no sound .... I was getting really frustrated with no sounds coming from my apps.

JUst in case u don't understand what I'm saying review the web site

  • DougHorne Level 1 Level 1

Sorry Josh ... that's not it.  If I double-tap the home button and look at sound controls, there is no volume slider (it's not there ... the genius couldn't find it either).  Also, in the Music app there is no volume slider ... none ... doesn't appear.  In Settings, there is a volume slider, so at least I can change the sounds of one app ... the new alarm clock ... that's it.  If I plug in headphones, there is sound.

You solution is simplistic, and for people that don't understand how iPads work, I suppose that it's useful. Some of us here have a more complex problem.  The odd part is that Apple admits that it exists because the Genius acted like he'd seen this before, and suggested that under warranty, they'd replace my iPad. Strangely, when out of warranty, the problem is not acknowledged to exist and there is no solution whatsoever ... zero   ... Apple broke my iPad, and now will not do a **** thing to fix it.

  • Georgia pch Level 1 Level 1

ACtually it is there you have to slide the icons to the right at the bottom and click on the speaker to the left. Which will show a lock or unlock symbol on top. Once u unlock you will see a song appear then u restart your iPad and volume works... It just fixed mine. Maybe it was user error look at the website and follow instructions carefully. Also I said depending on type of IPad it may show mute but if the name of one of your songs appear then it works.  Go to your music and hit play before u start

  • Georgia pch Level 1 Level 1

EVerything you said was wrong with mine and now all I hear is sound. Just trying to help cause it worked for me. The same issues you had. I had.
