How do I tell if my iPhone 4S is unlocked?

Yesterday I spoke with my carrier, Sprint, and they said they were sending the verification to Apple that my iPhone 4S should be unlocked. The man at Sprint said to wait 24 hours, then sync my iPhone 4S with iTunes and I'd be good to go. I've now synced the iPhone 4S with iTunes but cannot tell whether the phone is actually unlocked or not. How do I do this? Thanks in advance.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1, 16gb

Thank you all. Peter, I read the support article but had hoped I could simply get the phone unlocked here in the US, then purchase a SIM card when I got off the plane in Italy, insert it in the phone and that everything (calling, data, text) would work. According to the support article there's a lot more to it than that. If erasing the phone and then restoring the phone using iTunes is required that's going to put a crimp in what I'd planned to do because I won't have a computer with me on the trip. I apologize if these are elementary questions but I've never done this before. I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how best to proceed. Thanks again.

I have just realised Sprint is CDMA ,you as you realise, have Sprint

unlock the sim slot and you should then be able to use a GSM pay as you go sim

overseas

Did you follow the Sprint instructions to the letter ,you must and the only

way of really establishing the unlock is successful is to put in a GSM

micro sim from an approved Apple carrier

This will show approved Italian carriers

I am assuming you are still in US

I suspect you still have to follow the Apple Support document ,you will not lose anything

in process

Yes, I planned to use a TIM card which is one of the approved Italian carriers. Sprint's instructions were amazingly simple. They just told me they had authorized the unlock with Apple, for me to wait 24 hours and sync my iPhone with iTunes. That was all. I may be able to get the TIM card here in the US and am investigating now. Thanks very much for your response.
