Where did you get/buy this phone?  You can try getting a different sim card, but I don't think that will help.

When you see those sim message it usually means that the phone was illegal unlocked and when you restore your phone it locks back to the original phone carrier.

Remove and reinsert the SIM card. If that doesn't work get a new one from AT&T (it should be free).

The other possibility is that the phone was hacked or jailbroken. If this is the case updating it caused the problem, and there is no easy solution and no solution that can be discussed in an Apple-hosted forum.

then you need to contact your friend and find out all the answers and see if the phone was ever hacked or jailbroken.

Restore your iPhone in from itunes, after you set your phone up, on your iPhone, go to Settings>general>about  if a prompt comes up saying there is a carrier update, update it. But if not i recomend a new sim card.
