Started the MacBookPro holding down command and control keys. Came to Mac OS X Utilities window. Selected Disk Utility. It showed the factory installed disk (320GB) with two partitions, the main HD with 284GB and Boot Camp with 34GB. Selected the main HD (284GB) and erased it using the option "Erase Free Space". Once that was completed successfully I attempted erasing the Boot Camp using the same procedure and got the answer "Secure Erase Free Space Failed" because of the error "A disk with a mount point is required."

The way to remove a Boot Camp partiton and return the disk to a single partition is to start Boot Camp Assistant and select the menu iyem to remove Windows and return the disk to a single partition.
