Question

Lock Rotation VS Mute

My goal is to still hear the typing & other sound effects, but to still be able to use the "Use Side Switch to" button to lock or unlock screen rotation (most of the time I leave it locked but every once in a while I want to quickley unlock the rotation to watch a video or something). In the "General" settings

If I check the "Lock Rotation" option I am able to mute or un-mute the sound effects with this button, but then I can't use this button to lock and unlock the rotation.

If I check the "Mute" option I am able to lock or unlock the screen rotation, but all the sound effects are muted.

Hi alanchris,

That's correct. It is one or the other - they are mutually exclusive.

There is no way to just leave the sound effects unmuted all the time, and just use that button to lock or unlock screen rotation?

OK, sorry - I may have misread your post. When you check the Lock Rotation option, you should be able to hear sounds, and use the side switch to lock or unlock the screen rotation. When it is set this way, you can only mute the sounds by turning the volume off.

When you check the Mute option, you should be able to mute or unmute sounds with the button, but the screen will rotate whenever you rotate your device.

Is that not what is happening? What device are you using? What OS are you running?

No, it works the opposite of that, it works like I described above.

I am on an iPad 2 and have whatever the latest OS, the one that came out last fall.

OK, well, let's start with a reset (this won't reset any of your settings or preferences):

Hold both the Home Button and the Sleep Button down at the same time and hold until the silver Apple appears (ignore the red slider if it appears). Once it has restarted, check the settings again to see if they are working correctly now.

Also, check your OS level - Settings>General>About - Version should be = 5.1.1

If it is not, then go to Settings>General>Software Update and update your IOS to 5.1.1

If none of that works, then you probably will need to either call Apple phone support, or take it into your Apple Store to have a Genius look at it.....
