Google contact mess when syncing 2 iPhones

We sync 2 iPhones (3GS) to our computer (MacBook Pro) -- my husbands and mine. Our problem is that our google contacts get combined during a sync instead of syncing 'his to his iPhone' and 'mine to my iPhone.' Any suggestions??

iPhone 3GS (8GB), Mac OS X (10.5.8)
