Sleepy Apple Mail - any advice?

Periodically my Apple Mail (system 10.7.4), stops downloading incoming mail, even when probed to do so. The ony recurse which I found so far is to restart the mail application, and send a message tomyself. That puts it back on track. That's rather cumbersome, and annoying. Any advice?

MacBook Air (13-INCH, MID 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.4), problem also on my other mac's
