My convoluted work-around for this Kensington TrackballWorks driver issue.

With Mountain Lion I went into the System Pref's>Users & Groups>Login Items and clicked the '+' (plus) to add an application when you start your Mac.

When the '+' is clicked a window opens and you may have to use the Admin Code to proceed, I authorized this.

In the Add Application window that opened I drilled down to Library>PreferencePanes>TrackballWorks.prefPane and clicked 'Add'.

This added the TBWorks PrefPane to the Login Items window. I checked the 'hide' box and closed System preferences.

Now, when I Boot into Mountain Lion the TBWorks System Pref Pane shows on the desktop, I click it closed and my Expert Mouse works just like I programmed it.

Parcher, you need to read the instructions outlined above by the other users! We are all experiencing the same issue of the driver not loading on startup, but the work-around, even though it is annoying, does work:

1. after starting up, go to System Preferences

2. click on Trackball Works (bottom row)

3. close the window of the preference pane, once it starts up

4. voilà, it now works and all your programmable options are available

You need to do this EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU START UP, but not needed if the Mac was only asleep.

A step can be saved here by initially going to Library>PreferencePanes and then dragging the TrackballWorks prefPane icon into the documents area of the dock. In the future, you can skip the step of opening System Preferences by just clicking Trackball Works in the dock. Of course Fang Suede's method uses even fewer steps.

The lack of an up-to-date driver is causing me to have permission errors that I must repair at restart. It is a real time suck. I will be working along and suddenly my Expert Mouse won't respond. When I restart I get the error message with the four languages that drives to the Disk Utility. It takes two rounds of Repairing permissions with disk utilities to get it to work. Until the glitch happens again. Sigh.

If anyone has this experience and hints I welcome them.

Thanks!
