26 Gigs worth of backup information?

Greetings,

While trying to clear some of the space on my Macbook air (latest edition, no idea what it's called, bought it a few months ago), I noticed that I have quite a few gigs on my Macbook listed as "Backups". I have used the time-machine function, but I saved the information on an external harddisk.

My question: where can this data come from, and can you delete it (even if unadvicable)?

Thanks!

OS X Lion- About Time Machine's "local snapshots" on portable Macs

Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder and enter or paste the appropriate command line. Press RETURN and enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed.

To turn them ON: sudo tmutil enablelocal

To turn them OFF: sudo tmutil disablelocal

Note that turning them OFF will also delete all existing snapshots.
