Makes no difference what task. My library has 21,000 photos on a drive with 200 GB free, so plenty of space. I've seen on the forum that many advise to reinstall from original disc. My mac pro is from 2006, so would I install from the disc and then download the latest update? If so, would my folders, books, slideshows and faces remain intact?

Why is it crashing?
There are three common areas that cause crashes
1. The Library - reinstalling won't make a whit of difference here
2. The App - reinstalling will make a difference here
3. The OS - reinstalling the App won't mke any difference here
And there are other (rather rare) reasons like hardware problems that can cause problems too.
So, before deciding to reinstall, wouldn't it be best to discover the reason for the crashes, and then to act on that information?
Post the first 50 lines only of the crash report
To your specific questions:
1. You would re-install iPhoto 11, there's no need to go back to iPhoto 6 or 08 or whatever was there day one.
2. You always have an up-to-date back up, right? Well no sensible person would try something like this without having a back up. But re-installs do not, in general, affect the Library.

As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
just did this and things are working good - should i start a new library and import all my photos
Let's try repair the other one - it's less work.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Never had to test it but I assume time machine does a full backup of iphoto (if the app is closed)
I did a rebuild and I'm now getting a "No available themes" when I try to print. Should I go to option 2 or do I delete and reinstall the app?

Terence, I am having a very similar issue with iPhoto 11. I upgraded to Mountain Lion at the end of July, and to iPhoto 11 two days ago becuase iPhoto was crashing when I launched it. I have researched all the discussions on similar issues and I have tried many different things with any success.
Tried and did not solve the problem:
1. Reinstalled Mountain Lion
2. Reinstalled iPhoto 11
3. Downloaded iPhoto Library Manager and tried to rebuild the library but iPhoto 11 continued to crash as iPhoto Library Manager attempted to import 400 plus events.
4. Luanched iPhoto holding the Command and Option keys, went thru all the options there and it fix the issue.
Any other ideas?
I would send you the crash report but I am not sure where to find it.

Reinstall.
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.
