Here are a couple of troubleshooting tips from the Apple site:
- Verify that the date and time are set correctly on your iOS device or Mac.
- The Apple ID you are using to register FaceTime on iPad, iPod touch, or FaceTime for Mac must be an email address.
- If your Apple ID is not an email address, you can change it on appleid.apple.com. This article provides instructions on how to change the Apple ID.
Also, here is a link to the Facetime support site. Probably a lot of info you already know, but there may be something in the Troubleshooting that will help:

Good luck!
Cheers,

Sep 8, 2012 4:10 PM in response to gail from maineby BBChris16,Thanks for trying to help but we've done all that already and to no avail. I've even reset my son's password 2x and it still comes up with the same error. This all started when I had to reset his password last week. I even tried to reset his password back to what it used to be but Apple won't let me. It states I can not use a password that was used within the last year....frustrated to say the least.
He's used the voice command to try to use facetime and while it looks like it connects for a second it then goes back to the home screen and won't work.
