Sorry, but the Express cannot "extend" the WiFi signal from a 3rd party router using wireless only. Apple's "extend" feature will only work with other Apple routers.

If you can permanently connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN Etherent ports on your Telstra router to the Express, the Express can be configured to provide more wireless coveage that way.

Hi there,

Not sure if this is still an issue for you, but I believe the answer above flagged as 'this solved my question' is incorrect. I am Telstra 4G wifi hotspot, an Airport Express and an iMac in front of me. I have the Airport Express set to 'Extend a wireless network' (being the 4G) and it works perfectly. The Telstra device still detects the number of devices connected, however, so there is no way around the 5 device limitation.

Simply use Airport Utility to change your Airport Express to 'Extend a wireless network' instead of 'Create a wireless network' and problem solved.

Hope this helps.

I have a 4G Telstra Modem and a Time Capsule/Airport Extreme plus Mac Pro + IMac + Mac Book+2 iPads+2 iPhones. I have got around the 5 item limit by just connecting up the iMac and Mac Pro by ethernet to the Airport Extreme ethernet ports. The Airport "sees" the internet signal as I have both computers sharing internet signals (set in sharing panel in System Prefs).

So now my iMac and Pro connect wirelessly to the 4G modem and all my miriad of other Apple stuff connect through my personal network vis the Airport Extreme. No limits to the number of connections. Cool A?

If anybody would like further info on this just give us a shout.

Peter.

I am shouting.

Got the 4G telstra, got the new Airport Time capsule, Got my Mac connected via ethernet to TC. Opted to Extend a wireless network. As you appear to have done, I would like to connect Apple TV, 2 Iphones and an Ipad to the TC, however I am not sure how to connect to the TC. It does not appear to be broadcasting a Wi Fi network to connect to.

Airport Utility seems to suggest TC is unhappy. While I have a green spot next to internet, Network shows my Wi fi network, but connection is Unknown, I have an IP address, serial no and version 7.7.1 but on status I get all orange

Internet connection - Apparently my IP address is not valid

No DNS Servers -apparently no DNS addresses

Wireless Network - Apparently I have set it up to join a network that cannot be found.

The Wireless Network name I had to type in but it appears correct. Currently showing only 4 attached to 4g WiFi.

I am stumped.

Right:- Your Mac is connected wirelessly to the Modem on one network and your Mac is connected by ethernet to the TC. Go into your mac System Preferences and select Sharing; make sure that Internet Sharing is turned on and there is a green button telling you that. Make sure you are sharing your connection from Wi Fi also make sure that it is connected by Ethernet 1 (or 2 depending on your set up.

Next create a network from your TC (through Airport Utility) so that all your other devices can join the Wi Fi streamed internet signal that now come from the modem to the Mac (Wi FI via Modem), them from the Mac to the TC (via Ethernet), then via the TC and your newly created network to your other devices.

Let me know how you go; it is not an easy set up and I only discovered it by accident.

It is going to give you double if not triple NAT.. as Telstra will give you a private address on their wireless system unless you specifically request a public IP for VPN or some such purpose.. it was free but they may now charge extra for it.

You have NAT in the 4G router and then NAT again via the ICS in the computer.

Bob was quite correct in his initial explanation but you can bridge the 4G to ethernet with an airport express and use the AE or TC then as a router.. still double NAT but you don't need to run the computer as a router.

Only the Express has this ability, neither AE or TC can wireless bridge to a third party wireless router.

Brilliant. Sorted - and much apprecaited. First time ever I have a green light showing on the TC.

I purchased the TC to help limit my internet usage and to have backup. I was chewing up a lot of usage accessing my own Itunes library over wifi to my apple TV - playing music, watching movies. So my next project is to use my local network to access Itunes in my Mac. Do I need to relocate it onto the TC or given my Apple TV is accessing the TC network can i just leave it where it is?
