Can I unlock my iPhone 4S without the original sim card?

Hi everyone,

I purchased an iPhone 4s last Novemeber in Canada through the carrier Telus. I recently moved to Scotland for school and decided to pay out the rest of my contract with Telus so that I'd be able to get a sim card and plan with a UK carrier. Fearing the deactivation of my service wouldn't be until after I had moved, I left my original Telus sim card in Canada to avoid roaming charges. I purchased an Orange sim card and plan yesterday in Scotland, only to receive the error that only compatible sim cards will work with this iPhone. I backed up my phone and attempted to restore it with the Orange sim card in it (as the representative from the store told me that may work) but unfortunately I still receive the same error. Even worse, now that I've attempted to restore it I can't even activate it or access any of the usual phone functions, I can only see the inital set up process. I've since realized that my iPhone isn't unlocked and that I will need to get it unlocked in order to use it with the new carrier. Since I don't have my original sim card from Telus with me, I was wondering if it is still possible to unlock my phone here in Scotland, and if so, how?

Thanks,

Brian

The unlock of your phone can only be done by your original carrier which seems to be telus. Every carrier has different conditions linked to the unlock for other networks. Some need the phone to have a certain age or need you to have an active contract with them. Some charge you a fee or need you to fill a form or verify, that you have left the country. I dont soecifically know, what telus requires, but they are definitly the only ones, who can make your phone accept other sim cards. Of course you'll still be able to use it with telus now.

Alright, so I guess my next step is to give telus a call and see what they can do. Is there any way I can find the IMEI # even though I can't access my phone? When I turn my phone on it starts the activation process which I can't complete without a valid sim. I know you usually find the IMEI in the system settings but since I'm unable to see that, is there any other way to tell?

Thanks,

Brian

From the telus unlock info page

Unlock your TELUS Mike or mobile device for use with other carriers.

You can unlock your TELUS mobile device for use with other mobile carriers.

Device unlocking is the process of reversing the TELUS specific settings on your mobile device so that it can be used with a SIM card from other mobile carriers. TELUS will provide you with the code to unlock your device in order to enhance your overall mobile experience while maintaining the standard manufacturer’s warranty on your device.

......

Eligibility

Device unlocking applies to TELUS postpaid SIM-based devices that operate on our Mike, and 4G networks. In order to be eligible to have your device unlocked, you must ensure that your current device has been on the TELUS network for a minimum of 90 days and that your account is up to date and in good standing.

Rates

A $50 fee will be applied to your TELUS account.

If the company is one of the main stream strores, like pcworld, O2, Dixons etc. I don't see why that cannot legitimately unlock your phone. But using a corner like store, my main concern would be that it was jailbroken and not unlocked. There is no harm in contacting Telus to find out what their procedures are. Personally I would try and use the original company first. Then make a decision from there.
