What does '-tef' suffix stand for? Why are we seeing it?

Two questions, one to satisfy an obsession with details, the other a UI issue in iWork/Mountain Lion.

1. What does the suffix "-tef" added to iWork files stored in iCloud (e.g., pages-tef) stand for? Is it an acronym, a word, what?

2. More critical UI issue: Why are we seeing this when saving iCould iWork files? Isn't this revealing some part of the backroom structure of things that the system should be keeping track of? It exposes to the UI things that are not helpful and could be harmful (for example, what happens if I delete the suffix?). Just saying.

Once you save the file to iCloud the '-tef' disappears. You might get more detail by posting your question in the iCloud or Mountain Lion forums.
