Q: Don't have a delete icon on my toolbar

I just got a new iPad and in my mail app I don't have a delete icon on the toolbar. I am a new apple user so don't know where to look for commands and icons and the like. I'm sure this is simple...can anyone help?

Is it a gmail account ? If so then you can decide in the account's settings in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars whether to have an archive icon or a trashcan icon : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4207
