MTS video File to MPV?

I have a Lumix DMC-ZS3 camera that takes some fairly nice video in AVCHD-Lite format.

The end result is an MTS file. Is there a way to convert this file to an HD file my AppleTV

can playwith the tools provided on my Mac Snow Leopard?

If not what would be the best way to go about this.
