UPS for RAID (with auto shutdown)

Has anyone used an APC UPS with an Xserve and XserveRAID? Have they managed to get the powershute software to successfully powerdown the system in a power failure? I can't find any information about this on the net, so how did you do it?

I am hoping to get a Xserve and RAID and am thinking about using the serial port to powerdown the RAID, but also get a network card for the UPS to powerdown the Xserve using APCtracker software. Anyone think there would be any problems doing it this way?

Thanks in advance

Hello,

I have an UPC backup power system. It it connected on Xserve (USB) via the DataPort connector on the UPC side. In case of a power failure, the software lets you decide how long Xserve will work on the UPC backup (5 minutes for example) in case power comes back quickly. If not Xserve will shut down clean.

Good morning,

I am sorry i meant APC...
The software that comes with the APC unit is called APC powerchute personal edition (version 1.3.2). May be the version is different now, i got it 1 year ago. It is a software that appears in the system preferences like third party preference panel.
To answer your question, no, Xraid is not switched off. In my case, it will get power supply for about 20 mn.
When APC Powerchute shuts down Xserve, it means nobody can write on Xraid anymore. I assume (but may be i am wrong) that if Xraid is idle, a power cut is less a problem. If you find a system that switches off Xraid after Xserve, let me know it could be interesting.

Good luck

Thanks for that Pierre.

That all sounds good and it seems that the USB connection will work. What is the model number of the APC that you have? I am not sure how large a UPS I will need if I have an X-serve and a RAID. But twenty minutes of power sounds ideal.

Does anyone know how to reliably shutdown the XserveRAID?
