I just bought a new mac pro. I am transferring data from a 2008 macbook and using migration assistant on wireless connection. It originally said it would take 16 hours but its taken longer and it has stalled on 4 hours left. What should I do? if I end the connection will it screw my new mac up?
Yes, but not so you can't fix it, but don't end it yet, Wireless is extremely slow at this task and 24 hrs is not uncommon. If you must end it, delete the partial user it will have created and start again using anything other than wireless.

Sep 8, 2012 5:09 PM in response to Csound1by Ljonas,Ok So I stopped it early and I ended up setting up a new account on my new computer. However it didn't transfer my files and also I don't have my music and my license for my microsoft office programs, how do I got about deleting my new account and replacing it?

Sep 8, 2012 5:18 PM in response to Ljonasby clintonfrombirmingham,First, don't go wireless this time... try to plug both computers into your router (it will be much faster). Second, did your user accounts get transferred? Is that why you want to delete the 'new' one? If you can log into your old user account, as administrator, you can simply delete the new account by going to Users & Groups in System Preferences. But since everything didn't transfer, I'd hardwire them both and run Migration Assistant again so that all of your files, music etc., will be transferred.
Oh - and you'll need to enter your activation key for Office - for some reason, it never transfers with the activation key intact.
Good luck,
Clinton

Sep 9, 2012 11:21 AM in response to clintonfrombirminghamby Ljonas,Thanks again, So unfortunately I do not have a choice other than wireless, I'm trying again. Is it normal to be stuck on a time? It's been stuck on 9 hours and 55 minutes for like 5 hours. Normal? Should I wait it out? or is it worth it to go purchase a computer to computer firewire?

Sep 9, 2012 11:25 AM in response to Ljonasby Csound1,Why do you have no choice? You have a Mac Pro, use a CAT5e cable, $5 and 5 times as fast, $10 if you need a really long one. Wireless transfer is slow and unreliable, it should be the last resort, not the only one.
Depending how much is to be transferred you could wait as much as 24hrs.

Sep 9, 2012 11:56 AM in response to Ljonasby Csound1,Connect both computers to your network with CAT5e cable instead of wireless, if you have a newish network you will get a maximum speed (theoretical) of 1Gb/s, Firewire 800 is 0.8Gb/s, USB and FW 400 are around 0.4Gb/s and wireless 0.01 (B) 0.054 (G) or 0.3 (N), and in real life none of these will achieve their maxima (unlike the cabled connections which generally will)

Sep 9, 2012 12:30 PM in response to Csound1by Ljonas,Sorry if I sound like a fool, but do I just take that category 5 cable and put it in each computer's port? and then they should discover eachother? or do I have to plug each into the modem? Because I tried the former and they couldnt find eachother, it also didn't give me the option of choosing ethernet or firewire, it went straight to wi-fi.

Sep 9, 2012 12:37 PM in response to Ljonasby Csound1,You have a router in the system, it may be incorporated in the modem or it may be seperate, it provides the wireless network they are currently connected to. It should have several cat5 connectors on it (ethernet). You will plug both computers into it using these sockets.
Edit: You can if you prefer connect the 2 computers to each other by connecting them directly to each other using a single cat5 cable, memory needed a jog
Select the connect by ethernet option.

Sep 9, 2012 4:51 PM in response to Csound1by Ljonas,Great finally most things are done. The microsoft office is an issue. There is one other thing. So I have of documents and none of them got transferred. There is nothing in my "all my documents" in finder. Obviously there are a lot of important ones, I'm not sure what to do. I also am missing a ton of PDF's from adobe and I have nothin on my disk. is this remediable?
