Diagnosing cause of kernel panic on a Mac Pro

I've got an early 2009 Mac Pro with the following specs:

2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC

NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB

OS X 10.8.1

Problem is, at random times, my Mac would just shut down and then restart after I clicked through the "gray your Mac shut down without telling you because it's selfish" warning screen.

I took it to a local computer shop and they couldn't really tell, and suggested I do a clean install of Mountain Lion. I did that, got everything back on from Time Machine (just Documents and Music, no Libraries per the technician's instructions), and then last night it did it again. Restarted while I was working on a web site. No notice.

I wondered if someone could help me diagnose the problem or problems(s), since I can't make ANY sense of the sytem report.

Here is the complete system report when the panic occurred. Thanks for ANY help at all you can provide.

A note for anyone on Apple or really any onlne place...

Do Not post serial number it is yours and you want to keep it that way.

I guess a forum of "computer identity theft"

So happy to see it working... just wish it was as simple as "recommend" and be done.

A good system can't be beat. Image it. If you have time, it will save time to do a clean install and upgrades and image the system. Then install everything via Setup Assistant and whatever else you need to do, and when you get done, a 2nd image. So you have a vanilla system and a working system image.

All the fsck and Disk Warrior and DU Repairs will nice to get back up and runnning are not always clean and safe and 100%.

The user account probably takes the most I/O

The system caches for extensions and printers and other items that are easily rebuilt by a Safe Boot are good to do along with and after you have used Disk Utility from ML Recovery or from another boot drive like image of a clean system you made).

Thank you for removing that serial number Mr hatter.

Much appreciated.Advice taken and will be headed moving forward.

I was wondering when I posted it if it were some form of risk but now I guess I know. Funny that Apple didn't take it one step further and tied identity to something a level below the actual serial number...

Anyways the intent of the post was to be helpful to those that suffered like me and provide enough details that peopel could make intelligent comparisons. If the fix is new hardware then hey most of us with significnant commercial interests at stake would take this step as a no brainer.

Still no crash so far...

I'm glad to hear that it fixed the Preferences Display | Arrangement memory issue for you as well.

Rebooted and *** - my monitors are all in the correct order? Wow - I could get used to that 🙂

I'm always amused at the posts bashing Apple for this and threatening to go back to Windows. Really? I've had my MacPro for 4 years and this is the first serious issue I've had. It's a ~$250 fix on a ~$8k investment (when you add in software like CS4 for $2k) to replace a 4 year old component. That's 3.125%

KPs are very frustrating. So are GPFs and BSODs. Most of these get solved by a collaborative user community. For me, the best part about having a Mac are these discussion groups where you get state of the art assistance from committed and knowledgable users. That is priceless.

My ATI card arrived today. Install was a breeze

  1. ATI 5770 drives 2 LED Cinema Displays
  2. Old GeForce 120 drives 3rd LED Cinema Display

The ATI is a bit noisy at startup, but after a few minutes it quiets down nicely. Since I've switched to SSD, I've grown rather fond of a quiet office.

  1. All my windows remember all their locations between restarts.
  2. No Kernal Panics so far. Prior to this, I was getting one every hour.

Is it too early for a glass of Pinot Noir? Nah...

Apr 17, 2013 9:24 AM in response to The hatter

Thats not strictly true, I've been using a GTX265 (I think) with a GT120 for sometime and I have the issues, I suspect as do others here that its the case of having multiple nvidia cards.

I used to have a 4770 previously but it didnt really have the grunt and it didnt play well with Lion, I then upgraded to the GTX265 for Lion without issues, now Mountain Lion has come along I'm seeing issues.
