Q: Diagnosing cause of kernel panic on a Mac Pro

I've got an early 2009 Mac Pro with the following specs:

2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC

NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB

OS X 10.8.1

Problem is, at random times, my Mac would just shut down and then restart after I clicked through the "gray your Mac shut down without telling you because it's selfish" warning screen.

I took it to a local computer shop and they couldn't really tell, and suggested I do a clean install of Mountain Lion. I did that, got everything back on from Time Machine (just Documents and Music, no Libraries per the technician's instructions), and then last night it did it again. Restarted while I was working on a web site. No notice.

I wondered if someone could help me diagnose the problem or problems(s), since I can't make ANY sense of the sytem report.

Here is the complete system report when the panic occurred. Thanks for ANY help at all you can provide.

    arkange-

That is a Page Fault (often a reference to memory that does not exist). It occurred in code called by the Display Drivers.

The Mac OS X kernel alone does not tend to panic in this way. But you have added a number of kernel extensions which may be making the problem worse, or may even be the cause of the problem.

    com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic          7.0 15107.796624

    com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge          7.0 15107.796624

    com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook          7.0 15107.796624

    com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor          7.0 15107.796624

    com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect          7.0 15107.796624

    com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower          1.5.2

At a minimum, you need to be absolutely certain that all these extensions are completely appropriate for the version of Mac OS X you are running, and that they are the latest versions.

Apple will not commit substantial resources to your problem unless/until these problems occur with no third-party extensions present.

Why is your iPad showing as connected when you say your Mac was asleep?

    #iBroken Too!

Can anyone see anything untoward in this stack trace?

I get several panics a day now as well AFTER upgrading to Mountain Lion.

panic(cpu 14 caller 0xffffff8011251c07): "IOGMD: not wired for the IODMACommand"

That is a problem to do with Direct Memory Access for graphics cards.

Other users have discovered that multiple GT120 cards are not happy in 10.8.2.

I think NVIDIA may have a Driver Add-on or an updated driver for you to solve this problem.

Do you really need all these cards? each can support two displays by itself.

The thread noted below has a number of Readers who experienced graphics-related panics after installing 10.8.2. Mostly in Mac Pros and mostly using NVIDIA GT120 card or card(S). The suggested hack is to manually revert to the 10.8.1 version of

    Thank you for your reply.

I currently have 3 - 30" Dell monitros so the answer is no matter what I do I'll need at least 2 cards and 2 cards seems to be the trigger point.

And yes I could not imagine working with less than three monitors having done so for years now. I write Cloud softeware and even with three screens I find things crowded at times. Ultimately I would love to have 6 monitors.

Since 10.8.3 has yet to be released, that's a very helpful suggestion indeed.

Based on my experience, the only way to completely avoid KPs in this situation with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 is to connect both monitors to a single video card, using, in the case of the Mac Pro with GT120, a DVI-to-MiniDisplayPort adapter.

For three monitors, I am afraid there is no solution.

We'll see whether 10.8.3 finally brings relief WHEN IT COMES OUT.

    Piere (and Grant)

Could I completely reaplce the machine with a brand new one and expect this problem to be gone?

Could I make some intelligent choices in the purchase of a new machine that side-steps this issue for now?

Looking for a larger machine and willing to repalce the monitors for newer LED based units (less heat). Do NOT want to move up and find I'm just as dead in the water...

No idea. It's a software bug, which might only affect certain types of video cards or might also affect even the newest types of video cards.

There are strong expectations that Apple will release new Mac Pros this year... If you can wait, it might be a better approach. Of course, if you absolutely need three screens with no KPs right now, I am afraid the only way to find out if a new machine would help would be to ask someone who has one.

The other alternative, painful as it is, is to run Windows until (hopefully not forever) Apple manages to fix the problem.  I also run on 3 30" monitors and need the space.  Running Windows is painful but possible for my workflow and beats rebooting every 30 minutes.

I'm placing all my chips on 10.8.3 fixing this before I just abandon Apple for Windows permanently.

Any of you brave souls tried installing the new Nvidia drivers released on 10.1.12?

This post suggests that they may be experimental.

    http://www.tonymacx86.com/257-nvidia-releases-mountain-lion-10-8-2-graphics-driv ers.html

But, they are certainly available on the Nvidia web site.

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/macosx-304.00.05f02-driver.html

I have 3 GForce 120s which are supposed to be covered by this upgrade.

Note: There is a second install for CUDA

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda-mac-driver.html

I have no idea how to query what my current driver versions are so I'm a little nervous but I'm seriously tired of the panics.
