headphones do not work

We bought a used iphone 4 and have just noticed that when we plug in headphones, the suonds still comes out the external speakers. Anyone have any thoughts?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1

same deal apart from your detector being stuck on no headset mode but it's a hardware issue
