Problem exporting everything in Iphoto.

I'm hoping to create a backup of all of my 18,000 pictures. I've backed up the iphoto library, but I'd like to export the original photo files. The export function in Iphoto seems tailored to do just that.

When I select photos in the sidebar, then select file>export. I select my target external HD and Iphoto starts its work.

It gets through "preparing photos" and begins to export fine. But, after 829 or so of the photos, it snags and says can't create archive.

Its a MacBook Pro late 2011 running mountain lion with Iphoto '11 9.3.2

Any thoughts?

Can you give us the exact error message?

Couple of possibilities:

It can't find image no 829, or it is damaged, or corrupted

There's an issue on the external. What format is that?
