dismounting external drive in sleep?

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, my external drive (which I use for Time Machine) is dismounted when my Mac goes to sleep. As soon as I wake it up I see an error message that the drive was disconnected without properly dismounting it first. This has happened repeatedly. Indeed in one iteration the drive could not be accessed at all without reformatting it. Any clues about a fix.

The fix to this issue is very likely related to Mountain Lion's introduction of Power Nap.

I recommend going to System Preferences > Energy Saver. Look at both the Power Adapter and Battery tabs' options to turn on Power Nap, and turn it on as much as you can to avoid this drive disconnecting symptom.

Try the following in Terminal when logged in from an administrator account

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin -bool YES

Enter the password as requested and restart.

That sets the automatic mounting of externals at startup and insertion, and auto unmounting at shutdown, rather than the default behavior of mounting at GUI login and logout -- with sleep getting treated as a GUI logout. With that setting I find externals stay mounted during sleep.

If it doesn't work you can alway return to the default behavior with

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin -bool NO.
