Q: Safari 5.0.6 hangs on startup. No plugins. Cache thrown out. Reinstalled

All of a sudden, Safari on my mom's mini (OS 10.5.8, Safari 5.0.6) crashed. When I tried to restart, it hangs...and hangs and hangs.

I've reinstalled

I've thrown out cache.db

There have never been any 3rd part plugins installed

I've reinstalled Flash

Fortunately I have another browser, Firefox, that actually works, since Safari all of a sudden always hangs. My mom was just browing her usual 3-4 sites -- no YouTube, nothing exotic.  Here's the beginning of the hang report (I've sent multiple copies of it to Apple, and can provide more...) Thanks for any suggestions.:

One additional point: If I create a new user, then Safari works there.

I've tried throwing out all the preference and library files using various lists from the web -- Library/Cache files, Library/Preference, and Library/Safari.

    I cleaned caches using Onyx.

    Still hangs hangs hangs.

    Is it hanging or crashing?

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

    Click OK.

    Also, turn off IPv6:

    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6

    Or whatever Interface you use.

It's hanging, as the report says.

But adding the DNS servers helped.

It seems I earlier added other DNS servers manually (google's)...they are there, greyed out, and I can't seem to get rid of them but the new ones made Safari load rather than crash (after a long wait the first time)

Good to hear, let us know if it keeps working.

Yeah, for some reason not really known to me, you can't change the grayed out ones in higher OS versions.

I cannot thank you enough for this! My wife's 2008 MBP had slowed down to the point of desperation when it came to browsing. Despite having enough free HD space, free RAM, clear caches & no excess plugins or extensions Safari would hang for 15-20 seconds per page! It was infuriating and I was about to throw the thing out of the window when I read your post! Having done what you suggested it now works like it once used to! Thanks so much for sharing this info!
