Reading Windows Notepad documents on iMac

I'm going to be getting an iMac in the coming months. Presently I am a Windows user.

I have a large collection of text documents that I created with the Notepad program in Windows. Documents saved with this program are saved with the .txt file extension. I've had a quick Google and it would seem that its possible to read these files on a Mac, however the search results I read are for earlier versions of the Mac OS, and wondered if it was still supported with Mountain Lion.?

I was wondering if it would be possible to read and edit these files with my iMac with Mountain Lion?

If it would not be possible to read them, is there an application for the Mac that would allow me to read and edit the Notepad .txt files.
