Battery indicates X; fan is running full out

MacBook Pro 15" indicates an X at the battery display; also fan is running full out. Unit is plugged in and not recognizing a charge. I'm sure this is a common issue. Tried resetting a few things as per the "online" advise but to no avail. Help. Doogle23

First of all, do not fully discharge your battery. This is what happens when you do.

Do a SMC/PRAM reset.

Leave it plugged in for a while and start using it plugged in.

Best idea to keep it plugged in when you're close to an outlet and let it run on it's own power once in a while. When it gets down to 80% charge it back up.

Once a month, use it until it's down to 40%, recharge it back up to keep it in optimal condition.

Again, never let it discharge to 0%.
