Q: grey and white checkerboard screen using airplay when playing DVD from macBook pro

When trying to play a DVD using airplay from macbook pro I get audio but video displays a black and white checkerboard pattern.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

When i first setup APPLE TV and airplay mirroring the first attempt on playing a dvd streamed to my tv then went blank. if i play a cd the notebook screen will stream to the tv and audio is good. Only seems to block dvd's
