Q: Iphoto freezes when I try and delete a large amount of photos

Yes you can only delete in small batches. 100 or so at a time

As to size typically library size does not slow iPhoto down and 16k is not a rage library. I have nearly 50k and libraries of 350k have been reported here.

Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

If that fails:

Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Ive been trying to delete an iPhoto library with 150k pics. When emptying the trash bin, the emptying window says its deleting 1,000,000.00+ files and its taking too long. Possibly even days. Any ideas how i can speed this up?

Are you using iPhoto to delete? If so

you can only delete in small batches. 100 or so at a time

Or are you trashing the entire iPhoto library using the finder? If so then ask for help in the forum for you OS - it has nothing to do with iPhoto - could there be 1,000,000+ files in a 150,000 photo iPhoto library - possibley although I doubt it - it would depend on how many photos of groups of people you have primarily

You're deleting a whole Library at the Finder trash? That's one for a Finder forum.

How long have you let it proceed?  Do you have Empty Trash securely checked in the Finder's Advanced preference pane? 

If so it can take an even longer time.

Yes i noticed on its face that it's a Finder issue. However, i've deleted the same file sizes before with ease. My concern now is whether or not Trash is taking too long to empty precisely because its a iPhoto Library i'm deleting. Ive tried it with other kinds of files like movies.

Thanks OT. Does this mean i should't use the empty trash securely option? What I did a few hours ago was delete the Masters folder. 500GB+ took around 6 hours to delete. There's 5 GB of iPhoto Library left to delete and where i tried deleting it, the emptying window said there was 500,000 files to delete. Only iPhoto Library is in the trash bin

No - it means that emptying the trash securly takes longer (in my expreiance a whole lot longer) - it is fine but is much slower

Securly or not is totally your choice - but it affects the time it takes

I'm deleting it using the Empty Trash option. So far a bit more than an hour for 5GB and its still deleting. Just have to wait for it. Thanks!
