is sync between an Iphone and the address book two way?....or does one overwrite the other.

It seems that when I delete a contact on the Iphone.....and edit it in the address book, the iphone deletes the contact from the address book.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

Contact syncing is bi-directional. However, if you delete a contact on your phone, then sync, the expected behavior is the contact will be removed from the Address Book on your computer, regardless of whether you edited such on your computer. So, what you're seeing is the way it works. If you just wanted to edit the contact, you should not have deleted it on your phone.
