My time machine just started the same problem. Used Airport Utility to restart the time capsule, then it worked fine.
How do you use Airport Utility to restart the TM?
I mean TC, Time Capsule.
I have the same problem since moving to Mountain Lion, but I don't understand what you mean by restarting my Time Capsule using Airport Utility. I can open Airport Utility fine but how do I then get it to perform a restart on my TC? Thanks

Which version of AirPort Utiliy are you asking about?
If you want to restart, it is really much simpler to unplug the power cable at the back of the Time Capsule, and plug it back in again.
I am using 6.1. The problem is the same one as the lead for this thread, that since I moved to Mountain Lion is get error messages saying the sparsebundle is in use. The response suggested restarting my TC using APU.
Thank you. This seems to have fixed the problem, once I also restarted the Mac too.
I am using a NAS that supports TimeCapsule protocols to back up my Mac, and I get the same failure. We'll find out if restarting the NAS has the same success - I really don't like restarting it. As a large raid array with a number of uses, restarting is a heavy hammer.
I'm having the same problem. I had a lot of problems initially setting up (which you helped with!) and I use Airport Utility 5.6. when I try restart on this it just keeps waiting to restart ( i looked for TC on 6.1 and it wasn't available). I'm on 10.7.5
thanks
